All resources used are quoted at the bottom of the page. Would you like a color checklist to keep track of all the colors? You're in luck! You can print one off here: Degenhart Owl Color Checklist.
PLEASE NOTE: Our color reference guide lists almost 360 different colors/finishes. We suspect there could be more. Some owl variations are so similar that determining the color names is almost impossible. Colors would often start out as one shade in the morning and would be given a different name by evening if they became lighter or darker throughout the day. Some colors only have a very subtle difference because of this. Certain slags and opaques can vary greatly but still have the same color name. A good example would be "Baby Green," (which ranges from pale green to pale blue.) and "Baby Green Slag" (which ranges from a pale green with barely any lavender present to being almost entirely covered in lavender). Because of extreme color differences like this, there can be multiple owls under the same name in entirely different color categories for the color reference guide.
Resources used:
*Rainbow Glass Review Journals from 1976 to 1977.
*Original Degenhart glass color records that were documented by Alma Collins. These records were updated periodically. They were created in co-operation with Elizabeth Degenhart, Bernard M. Boyd, Mrs. Erna Burris, Mrs. Iona Norris, Paul B. Miller and Jabe Tarter.
*The Museum of American Glass located in West Virginia. They have an impressive Degenhart owl display that was from Elizabeth Degenhart. We referred to the many pictures of their owl display quite frequently.
*The collectors guide titled: Degenhart Glass and Paperweights. This guide was an invaluable resource and helped tremendously in my research.
*Roy Fink - We reached out to Roy to ask permission to use the majority of his pictures for the Degenhart owl color reference guide. His massive collection came from an estate sale. The previous owners were close friends with the Degenharts and even loaned their Degenhart owl collection to local museums. This collection contained valuable colors that were often not seen. We were very thankful for the opportunity to use pictures from this collection.
*The Facebook page "Degenhart Glass Pooch Dog Colors." This was another very helpful resource for color identification. There is an impressive amount of high-quality pictures showcasing the many colors that Degenhart Pooches come in.
